Request informationA self-drive trip through the landscapes that made Iceland famous. From the capital you head north to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, with its lava fields and fishing villages. Then comes the Golden Circle, with Þingvellir National Park, the geysers and Gullfoss waterfall, followed by the long road south-east to the Vatnajökull glacier and the Jökulsárlón lagoon, where icebergs drift out to sea.
The return follows the south coast: the black beaches and sea stacks of Vík, the Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. The last day is spent in Reykjavík, small, colourful and full of cafés, museums and bars.
Hotels are booked stage by stage, so you drive at your own pace. We can extend the trip, choose higher-category hotels or add experiences such as an iceberg boat tour, a glacier hike or a soak at the Blue Lagoon.
8 days in the programme
Car pick-up and a first evening in the capital. Arrival at Keflavík airport, car pick-up and drive to Reykjavík, about 45 minutes away. The centre is easy to explore on foot: Hallgrímskirkja church, Lake Tjörnin and the colourful streets around Laugavegur.
Lava fields, cliffs and the village of Stykkishólmur. Leaving the capital, the road heads north-west to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, often called "Iceland in miniature". Along the way you find cliffs, beaches, lava fields and the glacier-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano. Overnight in the fishing port of Stykkishólmur.
Þingvellir, Strokkur geyser and Gullfoss waterfall. Back inland for the Golden Circle. In Þingvellir National Park you walk through the rift between the North American and Eurasian plates. Then the Geysir geothermal area, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, and Gullfoss waterfall. Overnight near Gullfoss.
The iceberg lagoon at the foot of the glacier. A long drive south-east, with the coast on one side and glaciers on the other. You enter the Vatnajökull National Park area, home to Europe's largest glacier, and reach the Jökulsárlón lagoon, where icebergs break off the glacier and wash up on the black sand of Diamond Beach. Overnight near Höfn.
Skaftafell, black beaches and sea stacks. Heading west along the south coast, with an optional stop at Skaftafell for a walk towards the glacier tongues. Arrival in Vík, with the black beach of Reynisfjara and the basalt sea stacks rising from the ocean.
Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss and back to the city. Back towards the capital, past two of the island's most famous waterfalls: Skógafoss, 60 metres high, and Seljalandsfoss, where a path runs behind the falling water. Arrival in Reykjavík in the afternoon.
Museums, the harbour and, if you like, the Blue Lagoon. A free day in the city: Harpa concert hall on the harbour, the National Museum, the old harbour district with its seafood restaurants. If you like, you can go whale watching or relax at the Blue Lagoon, on the way to the airport.
Car drop-off and flight home. Drive to Keflavík airport, return the car and take your flight home.
