Request informationThe Romantische Strasse runs for about 370 km from the Bavarian Alps to the Main valley. It starts in Füssen, the town of lute makers, with the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau a few kilometres away, and heads north among meadows, rococo churches and walled towns.
Along the way, the Wieskirche, a UNESCO site, Landsberg am Lech, Renaissance Augsburg and Nördlingen, enclosed by its walls inside an ancient crater. Then Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, among the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany, the Tauber valley and finally Würzburg, with the Residence and the Franconian vineyards.
You can do it with your own car, driving from Italy, or with a rental car.

Where the road begins. Arrival in Füssen, a historic town known for making violins and lutes. About 5 km away are the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, built by Ludwig II's family.
The Wieskirche. A stop at the Wieskirche, a rococo church set in meadows and a UNESCO site. On to Landsberg am Lech, with its square and medieval gates.
Renaissance and walled towns. Augsburg, the Renaissance city of the Fuggers and the Reformation, birthplace of Mozart's father. Then Nördlingen, a medieval town built inside a meteorite crater, with walls you can walk all the way round.
Two medieval towns. Dinkelsbühl, with its intact walls and the large Gothic church of St George. Then Rothenburg ob der Tauber, with its 14th-century walls and market square.
Bad Mergentheim and Tauberbischofsheim. Down the Tauber valley: Bad Mergentheim, a spa town with the Teutonic Order castle, near Weikersheim castle, then Tauberbischofsheim with its cobbled old streets.
The end of the Romantic Road. Arrival in Würzburg, on the Main. A visit to the Residence, a UNESCO site, and time for a glass of Franconian wine before the end of the trip.
