Request informationA tour of Madeira by car, changing hotels along the way. The first days are in Funchal, with the sugar cane museum, the Madeira wine lodges and the Eira do Serrado viewpoint over the Curral das Freiras valley, enclosed by mountains.
Then the south coast heading west, with the Cabo Girão cliff, one of the highest in Europe, and Ponta do Sol. You cross the island over the Encumeada pass to Santana, on the greener, wilder north side, with the black sand beach of Seixal and the lava pools of Porto Moniz.
A self-drive trip, with 7 nights in 3- and 4-star hotels with buffet breakfast and medical and baggage insurance.
8 days in the programme
The island of flowers. Arrival in Madeira and check-in at the hotel. A first stroll along the Funchal seafront.
Sugar and wine. A day for Funchal: the old town, the Lavradores market, the sugar cane museum and a Madeira wine lodge, with a tasting.
The valley among the mountains. Up to the Eira do Serrado viewpoint, high above the Curral das Freiras valley, and down to the village at the bottom, enclosed by mountains. A possible stop at Monte, above Funchal, on the way back.
The south coast. A drive west along the coast, preferring the back roads. A stop at Cabo Girão, with its glass platform on the cliff, then Ponta do Sol, the sunniest spot on the island.
Across the island. Up to the Encumeada pass, in the centre of the island, with views of both sides. Down to the north and Santana, with its traditional thatched houses.
The north coast. A day on the north coast: a swim on the black sand beach of Seixal and the natural lava pools of Porto Moniz. Return to Santana.
The north-east coast. Along the north-east coast to Faial and Machico, the town where the first Portuguese navigators landed, with its bay. On to Santa Cruz.
End of the trip. Drive to the airport, a few minutes from Santa Cruz, and end of the trip.
