Request informationAntigua is small, with low hills, colourful villages and plenty of beaches, said to be one for every day of the year. You get there via London, with a night at a Gatwick airport hotel to break up the journey.
Your base is Hawksbill Resort, on the west coast, with a garden view bungalow and the hotel's all-inclusive formula. One day is set aside for a trip around the island, with a swim among the rays of Stingray City, scenic stops and lunch at a local restaurant.
The other days are yours. English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard, sunset from Shirley Heights, Dickenson Bay, or no plans at all.
The trip includes flights from Italy via London, the night at Gatwick, six nights at the resort, private transfers in Antigua, the excursion and medical and baggage insurance.
9 days in the programme
Departure from Italy on a scheduled flight to London Gatwick. On arrival, make your own way to Hilton London Gatwick Airport, the hotel next to the South Terminal, linked to the building by a covered walkway. Check-in, room only. The night in London breaks up the journey so you reach the Caribbean rested. If you arrive early you can have dinner at one of the airport or hotel restaurants and get an early night, as the flight to Antigua leaves the next day.
Back to the terminal and a scheduled flight to Antigua, across the Atlantic. On arrival at V. C. Bird airport, in the north of the island, meeting with the driver and private transfer to Hawksbill Resort, on the west coast, a short distance from the capital, St John's. Check-in to the Garden View Bungalow, on the resort's all-inclusive formula. Depending on the arrival time, there is time for a first swim and to watch the sun set over the sea from the beach in front of the resort.
A first full day with no plans, to get over the jet lag. The resort looks out over several beaches, with calm, clear water good for snorkelling near the rocks. Offshore you can see Hawksbill rock, which looks like a turtle's head and gives the resort its name. The morning passes between the beach and the pool, the afternoon is for a walk along the shore or a rest in the shade of the palms. In the evening, an unhurried dinner at one of the resort's restaurants.
A day for the included excursion, a full trip around the island. You cross the hills and villages of the interior, stopping at viewpoints over the bays and the coast. The highlight is Stingray City, where you step into shallow water and swim alongside the rays, used to people. Lunch stop at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, stops at one or more beaches to swim and snorkel, then back to the resort in time for sunset.
Free day. An idea to be booked separately, with a car and driver or a taxi, to the south of the island. English Harbour is a sheltered bay where in the 18th century the British navy had its Caribbean base. Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO site, keeps its Georgian stone and brick warehouses, now restored and facing a marina full of sailing boats. In the late afternoon you go up to Shirley Heights, an old military lookout, to watch the sunset over English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour.
Free day. An idea to be booked separately. The morning in St John's, the capital, with its twin white-towered cathedral, colourful wooden houses and the shops of Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, near the harbour. Then north to Dickenson Bay, one of the island's best-known beaches, long and with calm water, where you can rent kayaks and pedal boats or book a boat trip. Back to the resort in the afternoon, with the rest of the day on the beach.
Last full day, free. If you want to see the country's other island, to be booked separately, a day trip to Barbuda by ferry or small plane. Barbuda is flat and sparsely populated, with long beaches of pale sand with a pink tinge and Codrington Lagoon, home to one of the largest frigatebird colonies in the Caribbean. If you prefer to stay, spend the day at the resort with a last snorkel, the pool and dinner at sunset.
Last breakfast and, depending on the flight time, time for a last swim. Private transfer to the airport and return flight to Italy, with a stopover. Overnight on board.
Arrival in Italy and end of the trip.
