From Kota Kinabalu you head up to Kinabalu Park, at the foot of Borneo's highest mountain, then to Sandakan for the Sepilok centre, which rehabilitates orphaned orangutans, and the Kinabatangan River, one of the best places in Asia to see wildlife.
The second part is on the Celebes Sea. Pom Pom Island is a small coral island near Semporna: white beaches, sea turtles and some of the richest reefs in the world, a short distance from Sipadan Island.
The return goes via Kuala Lumpur, with a night to see the Petronas Towers.
13 days in the programme
Overnight flight. Departure from Italy on a scheduled connecting flight to Kota Kinabalu. Night on board.
Arrival in Borneo. Arrival in Kota Kinabalu and transfer to the hotel. Free time on the waterfront.
At the foot of the mountain. An excursion to Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO site, with its montane forest trails and botanical garden.
Orangutans and the river. Flight to Sandakan and a visit to the Sepilok centre, which rehabilitates orphaned orangutans. Transfer to Sukau, on the Kinabatangan River, and a sunset cruise.
The river at dawn. A dawn cruise among proboscis monkeys, hornbills and crocodiles. Return to Sandakan.
The Celebes Sea. Flight to Tawau, transfer to Semporna and boat to Pom Pom Island.
Sea and reef. A free day on the island: snorkelling on the reef and swimming with turtles.
A free day. A free day. Optional boat trips to nearby islands or diving.
A free day. Another day of sea and relaxation.
Back to the mainland. A free morning, then boat to Semporna and transfer to Tawau.
The capital. Flight to Kuala Lumpur. Free afternoon and an evening at the Petronas Towers.
Farewell to Malaysia. Free time until the transfer to the airport and flight home. Night on board.
End of the trip. Arrival in Italy.
