Overview

A big loop through Texas, between cities and open spaces. It starts in Dallas and Fort Worth, where longhorns still parade down the street at the Stockyards, then Austin, the live music capital, and San Antonio, with the Alamo, the River Walk and the Spanish missions.

Heading west the landscape empties: Lake Amistad on the Mexican border, Del Rio and Big Bend National Park, where the Rio Grande flows through desert, mountains and canyons. You head north via Fort Stockton and Midland to Amarillo and Palo Duro Canyon.

It ends with two nights at the Wildcatter Ranch, near Graham, before returning to Dallas.

Independent self-drive trip with a rental car, 12 nights in hotels and medical and baggage insurance included.

Good to know

  • To enter the United States Italian citizens need an e-passport and an ESTA authorisation, applied for online before departure.
  • To drive you need your Italian licence, ideally with an International Driving Permit, and a credit card in the driver's name. Driving is on the right, as in Italy.
  • Big Bend is remote: petrol stations are few and there is often no phone signal, so fill up before entering the park.
  • Summer in West Texas is very hot: spring and autumn are the best seasons.
