From Entebbe, on Lake Victoria, you head north to Murchison Falls National Park, the country's largest, where the Nile squeezes through a gorge a few metres wide and plunges with astonishing force. Game drives among elephants, giraffes and lions, and a boat trip on the river to the foot of the falls.
In the Budongo forest you walk in the footsteps of chimpanzees. Further south, Queen Elizabeth National Park mixes savannah and volcanic lakes, and in the Ishasha sector lions climb into the fig trees.
The highlight comes in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO site: a trek through thick vegetation to spend an hour beside a family of mountain gorillas. You travel in a pop-up roof Land Cruiser with an Italian-speaking driver and guide.
12 days in the programme
On Lake Victoria. Flight from Italy to Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria. On arrival, transfer and check-in at your hotel.
The capital. Transfer to Kampala and a first taste of Uganda: the markets, the city's hills and its bustling street life.
Uganda's largest park. Departure north by Land Cruiser to Murchison Falls National Park. Arrival at the lodge in the afternoon.
Safari and the Nile. A morning game drive in the savannah north of the Nile, among elephants, giraffes, buffalo and lions. In the afternoon, a boat trip upriver among hippos and crocodiles to the foot of the falls, where the Nile forces its way through a gorge seven metres wide.
Tracking chimpanzees. A trek in the Budongo forest in search of chimpanzees, with the park guides. Then south to the Bugoma forest.
Savannah and crater lakes. A drive south along the Rift Valley to Queen Elizabeth National Park, among craters, lakes and savannah.
Safari and the Kazinga Channel. A day of game drives in the park, home to elephants, buffalo, lions and more than ten primate species. If you like, a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, among hippos and water birds.
Tree-climbing lions. A game drive in the Ishasha sector, famous for the lions that rest in the branches of fig trees. Then up into the forested hills of Bwindi.
An hour with a gorilla family. A trek through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with the park rangers to a family of mountain gorillas, with whom you spend an hour. In the afternoon, a visit to a Batwa community, the people of the forest.
Across the south-west. A long drive back to Kampala, through hills covered in tea and banana plantations.
Farewell to Uganda. Transfer to Entebbe airport and connecting flight home. Night on board.
End of the trip. Arrival in Italy.
